Mother of Precious actress sings in NYC subway

Although Gabourey Sidibe recently earned an Academy Award nomination for her performance in last year's 'Precious,' her mother is still singing underground in New York City subway stations to make money. Alice Tan Ridley shows up at least three times a week to sing her heart out and wow commuters with her R&B act. "My name is not on Gabby's paycheck," Ridley told The NY Post. "For a while, I was teaching and doing the singing, burning the candle at both ends to support my family," Ridley said. And now she has turned singing into her full-time career to put food on the table each night. Mom of 'Precious' Actress Sings in NYC Subways 'To Pay The Bills'

Watch after the jump.

Ridley worked as a former nursery-school teacher and Department of Education teacher's aide. But now she makes her money in the 14th Street/Union Square, 34th Street/Sixth Avenue and Times Square/Eighth Avenue subway stations.

Ridley believes she paved the way for her daughter's breakout role in 'Precious.' "Four years ago, they asked me to play the part of the mother," Ridley said. "But being a mom and teacher, I just couldn't play that part. It was just too hard."

"I read the book, and I gave it to Gabby. Her friends encouraged her to try out for 'Precious,' and she got it," she added.

At the end of the day, the Harlem mother isn't looking for any handouts, but she has had to limit her subway gigs because her amp needs replaced. "My voice is so big that it's blown out my amp, so I can't do more than that until I can afford a new amp," said Ridley.
I hope you don't mind PinkNC, I just thought Gabourey's mom is an inspiration to others!!

Why God Gave Us Friends.......PinkNC

I appreciated this person’s writing so much that I wanted to share it with all of you, as well.

**Why God Gave Us Friends**

God knew that everyone needs
companionship and cheer,

he knew that people need someone
whose thoughts are always near.

He knew they need someone kind
to lend a helping hand.
Someone to gladly take the time
to care and understand.

God knew that we all need someone
to share each happy day,
to be a source of courage
when troubles come our way.

Someone to be true to us,
whether near or far apart.
Someone whose love we’ll always
hold and treasure in our hearts.

That’s why God gave us friends

My Daily Tarot Card Reading for 8/16/07

Posted By haute kitty on Aug 16, 2007 at 5:47AM

AUGUST 16, 2007

Hello Ali,

Here's your Tarot Reading for AUGUST 16, 2007.

Love Touchstone Career

The Star represents hope and trust, and the Lovers symbolize uncertainty and lack of confidence. You can see a conflict brewing! To tell you that you'll need to have more faith in your significant other and in the future is a bit of an understatement today, dear Ali! Everything around you indicates that your situation is improving; your perspectives are good, luck is on your side, the people in your life are behind you. So why cast doubt on everything when it is clearly not necessary? On the professional side, you'll be able to reap the rewards of your efforts. The lean period is over, and your projects are suddenly kicking into gear. The combination of the card of Death and the Star is a clear sign that it won't be too long now before you will see success. So, even if it feels like you are only just at the bottom of a hill, you have every chance of reaching the summit! Go to it!

~*Things have been really hard lately and I've been through some really hard struggles in the past year. I know it's silly to believe in Horoscopes and Tarot Cards and things like that... but I like to believe when they say good stuff... they give me hope in a silly way.
